Computer rant forthcoming...

So on the evening of January 30th, I went to bed with my computer (2005 Apple iBook G4) running, as I always do. I rarely shut it down. The next morning, I woke up and it was off. I pressed the power button and heard it come on. Those of you who own a Mac as I do know the "chime" as it comes on. I heard that and a fan running inside, but the screen was totally dead. Huh?

I didn't have time to mess with it that morning as I had to go to work. So after I returned home I tried to turn it on again and the same thing happened. I contacted a friend of mine who is very computer savvy and he tried to help me over the phone. I connected it to another monitor to see what would happen. It "kernel panicked," which is like the Mac equivalent of a blue "fatal exception" screen on a PC. I took it over to his house and still nothing. We tried to hardware test it with the install disc, but it got stuck inside. I gave up and put it away until we could get to the nearest Apple store.

About 4 days later, we got to the store and when the guy went to turn it on, everything worked without a hitch. A report came up on the screen mentioning the kernel panics, but it wasn't specific about the issue. He got the disc out for me and recommended backing everything up and bringing it back to them so that they could send it out to a repair facility. I brought it home but did not use it to be on the safe side.

Two weeks later, we got everything backed up on an external hard drive. The plan was to try to hardware test it again to find out if there was a part failing. We went to restart it, and the same problem happened again. It lead us to think that maybe there was problem with the machine overheating.

Sooooo, I took it back to the Apple store again on Monday. They told me that they would ship it out the next day. On Wednesday, I get home from work and it's on my bed. It was back and repaired already. They had replaced the logicboard and the airport (internet connector).

I turned it on, and everything seemed to be fine. I then noticed this black screen with white scrolling text, and it was all code, with phrases like "kernel debugger" and other crap like that. It proceeded to crash about two minutes after everything loaded. I restarted it and the same thing happened again.

This morning, I planned to call AppleCare and tell them what was going on. I turned it on so that I could answer any questions they had about what was on the screen. Everything seemed to be working fine though, and the internet was proceeding normally. THEN I went to use Thunderbird to get my email, and then it crashes all over again. I called them right then and there, explained the entire situation, and the man I spoke to seems to think it's a software related issue. He told me that I should definitely not be getting the black screen that I saw in the beginning, and that the facility should have erased and restored my software when they performed the repair. Did I have the disc handy?

Unfortunately, no. My friend that I mentioned earlier installed the software from a disc that he owned. Long story short (too late), I'm going to be taking it back to the Apple store. I should mention that the logicboard was actually replaced two years ago along with the hard drive when they failed, and when I got it back, I didn't have any of these problems.

As of right now, the internet works fine, so I'm taking advantage of that to post this boring story. I have actually had a loaner iBook to use, but the internet is markedly slower on that machine. My browsing on here has been minimal at best.

---------------UPDATE----------------

I found out that the hard drive, which, as I mentioned, was replaced two years ago, is failing. :lamo: So I need a new one, which I should have by the end of this week. That should be the end of the problems...:ninja:
